This programme is designed to equip students with the fundamentals of computer science and computer engineering, while developing critical and analytical thinking skills. The Foundation in Computing & Engineering course is also designed to prepare students for admission into relevant undergraduate programmes.

A unique feature of our foundation in Computing and Engineering programme is that we offer a selection of elective subjects that cater to different interests and pathways to University Malaysia of Computer Science and Engineering (UNIMY) undergraduate programmes. Thus, prospective students will be equipped with the relevant knowledge and skills prior to admission into those programmes.

How Do I Get In?

  • Pass SPM /SPMV with at least credit in any 5 subjects; or 
  • Pass IGCSE / O-Level with a minimum of grade C in any 5 subjects: or 
  • Pass UEC with a minimum of grade B in any 3 subjects: or 
  • Any equivalent qualification recognized by the government of Malaysia. 

Trial Examination/ Forecast results are accepted

 English Requirement  

  • SPM/SPMV - Minimum Pass; or 
  • IGCSE - Minimum Pass; or 
  • MUET - Minimum Band 2.0; or 
  • IELTS - Minimum Band 4.0; or  
  • TOEFL - Minimum Score 397; or  
  • Other equivalent qualification recognized by the Malaysian Government 

** Validity of test results:  

  • MUET - 5 years  
  • IELTS & TOEFL - 2 years

COURSE MODULES

Semester 1 

English 1 

This module enhances the language proficiency of the students. It focuses on reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. Students will gain exposure to essays and reflective writing. Reading skills will enhance and enrich their sentence structures. The fundamentals of grammatical items are also taught to ensure good use of the language. 

Mathematics 1 

This module covers topics in Algebra and Trigonometry which are essential for developing a strong foundation for future coding-related subjects. Students will be exposed to concepts on each topic and how to apply respective formulas, sketch graphs, and solve different types of problems. 

Fundamental To Physics 

This module exposes students to the fundamental concepts of physics, including Mechanics, Waves and Optics. The topics covered in Mechanics are Physical Quantities Kinematics, Dynamics, Work And Energy, Uniform Circular Motion and Gravitation. Whereas Optics covers the properties of Light (Reflection, Refraction, Diffraction and Interference) and Mirror & Lenses. In Waves, students will learn about different kinds of waves, and Sound.

Fundamental To Computing  

This course exposes students to basic concepts of computing systems which include topics on hardware, software and basic applications. Students will learn topics such as software and hardware, basic networking concepts, databases, computer security issues and basic applications in Microsoft Office. 

Introduction To Emerging Science and Technology  

This course focuses on emerging technologies (past, present and future). The course concentrates on the effective integration of science in information technologies and engineering within organizations. The students will be exposed to a broad understanding of emerging technologies in general while developing their knowledge/skill in the use of certain particular science and technology. 

Semester 2

Presentation Skills  

This course exposes students to the skills they need in delivering effective and engaging presentations to a variety of audiences. These skills cover a variety of areas such as identifying the purpose and audience, creating the content, designing the slides, and delivering the content using the right tone of voice and body language. Students will also be taught how to respond appropriately to the audience in a question-and-answer(Q&A) session. 

Creative Thinking  

This course will equip students with theories and techniques that will help them understand the range of thinking abilities and how enhancing these can result in a higher quality of creative work. Students are encouraged to explore or broaden their own ideas and thought processes with techniques such as mind-mapping; expand, twist or synthesize ideas with techniques such as random association; and translate their ideas into a tangible form which can be interactive, presentable, entertaining or a form of a visual design statement. 

Fundamental To Probability and Statistics 

The objective is to learn to analyse data and use methods of statistical inference. This course covers the basic knowledge of statistics introducing both descriptive and inferential statistics. This course exposes students to basic probability and statistics which include the basic concepts of probability including events and conditional probability. Topics on statistics include on how to organize, measure and represent data and perform statistical inferences on data. 

Semester 3

English 2 

This course enhances the language skills of the students to an advanced level with an emphasis on writing skills and grammar for academic and technical writing. 

Mathematics 2 

This course covers topics related to matrices and basic calculus for students. The subject provides the methods to solve a system of linear equations, limits and continuity of a function, differentiation and its applications, integration and its applications and lastly solving the differential equations for first and second order by choosing the appropriate methods. 

Fundamental To Logic and Electricity  

This course exposes students to basic knowledge of electric circuits, electronic component, and logic gates. 

Introduction To Programming  

This course contains introduction topics to programming language. It includes an introduction to computers and programming as well as the basics of programming, problem-solving, and software development. Elementary programming, selections, loops, functions, arrays, strings and files, objects and classes, and GUI programming are among the topics to be studied in this course. 

Fundamental To Business Management  

This fundamentals of business management course expose the student to introductory business and management topics such as business environment, management, and leadership function, communication and information systems, operations and production management, marketing, financial management, and human resource management.
