Why Soft Skills Matter as Much as Hard Skills

It is very common for us Malaysians to think that preparing for their careers equals focus on technical knowledge: mastering the law, understanding finance, coding, or learning the latest design software.

These hard skills are essential, but in today’s job market they are no longer enough on their own. Employers are increasingly looking for something just as valuable…

    Strong Soft Skills

The Future of Jobs Report 2025 by the World Economic Forum highlighted critical thinking, communication, creativity, and adaptability as some of the most in-demand skills for the next decade. As automation and AI take over routine and repetitive tasks, what sets modern professionals apart is their ability to connect, solve problems, and lead.

For example, a lawyer who can explain complex cases in simple terms will always have an edge. A business graduate who can work across cultures and manage diverse teams is invaluable. An IT professional with technical expertise is important, but one who can also collaborate with clients and translate technical solutions into business terms becomes indispensable.

    How Soft Skills Shape Success

Soft skills make technical skills useful. You may know the law inside out, but without the ability to persuasively argue or negotiate effectively, your knowledge won’t be able to carry you. You may be able to design an app, but without empathy for user experience, it may never find success. In short, soft skills is your bridge between what you know and how effectively you apply it in the real world.

    Preparing for the Future

The good news is that soft skills can be developed. Joining clubs and societies, taking part in debates, working on group projects, volunteering, or even engaging in part-time work are all excellent ways to build them. Unlike hard skills that can be learned from textbooks, soft skills often grow from experience, practice, and self-awareness. So, put yourself out there!

    Why the Right Institution Matters

Ultimately, your education is about more than lectures and exams. Picking the right institution will equip you with all the technical knowledge for your chosen field, while also giving you the opportunities to develop leadership, communication, and teamwork. It is an ecosystem where you can grow your skills horizontally as well as vertically, preparing you for the specific and more broader challenges of the modern workplace.

In a world where industries are constantly evolving, finding that balance between hard skills and soft skills could be what makes you stand out in your career journey. Choosing the right place to study is the first step toward making that possible.

Why are Global Giants Choosing Malaysia?

Malaysia as a Rising Hub for Tech and Business Talent

    city scape at night

As many of you have read our previous stories, it is well known that Malaysia has been quietly but steadily transforming into one of Southeast Asia’s most attractive destinations for global investment.

Tech giants like Intel, Microsoft, and Google have all announced multi-billion-dollar projects here, from semiconductor manufacturing to cloud services and AI infrastructure. For students and fresh graduates, this is an incredibly exciting time to be joining the workforce here in Malaysia.

    But one has to ask…

Why are Global Giants Choosing Malaysia?

Malaysia offers a unique combination: a strategic location, a skilled workforce, and government policies that encourage growth in tech and business sectors. Companies see the country as a gateway to the wider ASEAN region, which has a fast-growing economy and a young, digitally savvy population.

When Microsoft announced its first cloud region in Malaysia, it wasn’t just for servers and data centers. It was mainly focused on building ecosystems that require talent in law, business, IT, digital media, and beyond.

Intel’s decision to expand semiconductor production here signals opportunities in engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, and international trade. These investments ripple across industries, creating a demand for skilled professionals across multiple fields.

What Does This Means for Students?

For business students, this growth means greater opportunities in management, finance, and entrepreneurship as global firms need local expertise. Law students will find themselves at the forefront of emerging areas like data privacy, intellectual property, and corporate governance as industries adapt to our rapidly changing legal landscape.

Tech and media students can expect booming demand in AI, game design, digital marketing, and software development as Malaysia cements its place in the global digital economy.

    The Importance of Being Prepared

This rising wave of opportunity is only beneficial to those who are ready for it. Graduates who bring not only academic knowledge but also practical skills, adaptability, and an international outlook will be in the best position to thrive.

And that is why choosing the right institution matters. Graduating isn’t enough anymore, you’ll need a place that gives you exposure, practical experience, and networks to connect you with the industries of tomorrow.

Malaysia is growing, industries are expanding, and opportunities are opening up faster than ever. The question is…

Will you be ready to take advantage of them?

    The Rise of AI Regulation

AI isn’t leaving. We need to get used to that and that isn’t inherently a bad thing either. It is completely understandable to be wary of it and to hear how it is used in some areas and be worried.

As the technology evolves, so too do the legal questions that surround it. Who is responsible when an AI makes a mistake? Can an AI own copyright to a piece of music it generates? How should governments balance innovation with public safety? These are not abstract debates.

They are real issues being raised in courtrooms and parliaments around the world. However, they signal one thing clearly:

Lawyers will play a central role in shaping the future of AI.

a woman in a black dress holding a blue bag
brown mallet on gray wooden surface

    Why AI Regulation Matters

The European Union recently passed the EU AI Act, the world’s first comprehensive AI law. It categorizes AI systems according to their risk and imposes strict requirements on high-risk applications, such as facial recognition. In the United States, copyright offices are grappling with whether AI-generated works can be protected.

Here in Malaysia, discussions are underway about data privacy, algorithmic accountability, and the need for frameworks to ensure responsible AI adoption. Many of which are held in campuses such as BAC’s PJ campus.

These developments are evidence of a growing legal frontier. Regulators, companies, and even individuals will need guidance on how to navigate these new rules. That guidance will come from lawyers who understand both the traditional foundations of law and the fast-moving world of technology.

    Opportunities for Future Lawyers

For law students, this shift is good news. Rather than reducing demand for legal expertise, AI is expanding it. Businesses need legal counsel on data governance, intellectual property, and liability. Governments need specialists to draft policies that balance tech innovation with fairness. International organisations require advisors to ensure AI rules are consistent across borders.

In short, AI is creating a demand for new legal niches. These range from technology law and data privacy to ethics and human rights in the digital age. For those willing to specialise, this could mean exciting career opportunities both locally and globally.

    What This Means for You

If you are a law student today, this rise in AI regulation is an indicator that your career is not limited to traditional courtrooms or corporate firms. You could find yourself advising on cutting-edge issues that affect millions, drafting policies that shape this new industrial revolution, or even helping design legal frameworks for technologies that do not yet exist.

The legal profession is evolving, and those who embrace change will lead it. Choosing the right institution, one that prepares you not only in legal fundamentals but also in adapting to these new challenges, is the first step to equipping you to be ready for this future.

Landmark Antitrust Ruling Against Google: What It Means for Law and Business

man in black suit standing on stage

In one of the most significant antitrust cases of the modern internet era, a US federal judge has ruled that Google must share its search results with rival companies but will not be required to break itself up. This ruling, which aims to address the company’s monopoly in online search, carries far-reaching implications for both the legal and business worlds.

The judge also placed restrictions on the payments Google makes to ensure its search engine enjoys prime placement on smartphones and web browsers. However, these arrangements were not completely banned, and the government’s request to force Google to sell its popular Chrome browser was denied.

What Does Mean for the Legal Field?

For the legal field, this case serves as a timely example of how antitrust law still is evolving to keep pace with the new and modern markets. There is a growing demand and the complexity behind that demand requires well trained lawyers to constantly be fed through the pipeline.

Regulating companies whose dominance is not just financial but deeply embedded in technology and user habits is something that requires a new breed of lawyers to tackle.

Law students and practitioners can see first-hand how our legal frameworks are being tested and reshaped to address questions of competition, innovation, and consumer choice in this supercharged evolution of industries.

    The Business Perspective

a person sitting at a table with a laptop

From a business perspective, the decision shows the fine balance between keeping markets competitive while also preserving incentives for innovation. Tech companies that rely on partnerships, exclusive contracts, or platform dominance will now be paying closer attention to how regulators interpret market power and monopoly practices. For emerging businesses, these ruling actually give new opportunities for aspiring entrepreneurs and business-savvy individuals to compete in spaces previously dominated by tech giants.

The ruling against Google is exposing a wider trend: regulators are increasingly willing to challenge the world’s largest corporations. For students and professionals in both law and business, it is another sign that understanding how regulation interacts with strategy is crucial for taking part in the corporate landscape of this century.
